Introducing The Copper Crew Discovers: Sauvignon Blanc!

It’s summer (sort of!) so we’ve launched not just a brand new wine (a Sauvignon Blanc) but a whole new range! Our new Discovers range is all about, well, discovering new wines. These are wines which are limited edition, seasonal wines. With South Africa imposing yet another (this is the 4th) ban on all domestic sales of alcohol, the reality is that huge volumes of wonderful wines have gone unsold and are quite literally being thrown down the drain. We think that’s a tragedy, so our Discovers range gives us the chance to bring you, The Crew, some very special wines. Once these wines are gone, they’re gone, so don’t wait.

Here’s what Sam has to say about the launch of our first Discovers wine, a wonderful Sauvignon Blanc from South Africa’s Elgin Valley:

"When I first set out to source wines for our cans, Theo hadn’t included a Sauvignon Blanc on the Gantt chart.  However, it turns out, there are some wines you just can’t say no to and, while sniffing around the cellars of the Elgin Valley, on the hunt for our Copper Crew Merlot, I accidentally stumbled across a cracking cool-climate Sauvignon Blanc.

That’s what happens when a pair of South African winemakers end up tasting through a cellar on a Friday afternoon.  We’re a notoriously friendly bunch, who love to share a glass and let’s just say one good wine led to another. Fortunately, persuading Oli and Theo that a new wine was a good idea wasn’t too hard either. The Elgin Valley lies in the heart of the Western Cape’s Overberg region and it’s where altitude, cloud cover and ocean proximity meet to produce a distinctive microclimate that’s cooler than the rest of South Africa’s wine regions. Perfect growing conditions for a crisp and delicious Sauvignon that’s full of flavour and texture and, in this case, layered with Elgin’s classic minerality.

What with Theo being a stickler for strategy, there was no home for it in our original range so we did what every pandemic entrepreneur would do and made a new one:  Copper Crew Discovers!

This is where we’ll introduce interesting one-off wines we find on our travels every year and this is our very first discovery. It’s mid-winter in South Africa but tasting this wine has me drooling at the thought of  summer and Braai time (South Africa’s version of a BBQ). I’m thinking crayfish on the coals, with a creamy cheese sauce, and a dollop of Ottolenghi’s white bean mash and garlic aioli on the side. With its hallmark cool-climate acidity, the Sauvignon Blanc will cut right through the richness. The palate is fresh and racy, with extended lees contact lending depth and texture. Cape Gooseberry, tropical kiwi and Passionfruit are followed by zesty Lime and a touch of Nettle and there’s a definite minerality here that leads into a chalky finish."

Well if that food pairing hasn’t got you excited we don’t know what will! Click below to shop our brand new Sauvignon Blanc
